Description

Arguably, Superman is the most popular and well know of all the comic book superheros ever created. His stories span over 60 years and countless numbers of villains. He has also starred in several other comic book series aside from the original Action Comics where Superman got his start. In this auction are nine issues from two of his series.
The first three are issues #441 (June 1988), #442 (July ‘88), and #443 (Aug. ‘88) from The Adventures of Superman comic. Each issue was written by John Byrne with Jerry Ordway, Andy Kubert, Albert DeGuzman, Anthony Tollin, Dennis Janke, John Statema, Doug Hazlewood, and Julianna Ferriter all contributing to one issue or another. Issues #441 and #442 also have cross-connecting stories with a couple of the other comics listed in this auction (in honor of the 50th Anniversary of the Man of Steel) in addition to having some notable guest stars such as the "imp from the 5th Dimension" Mr. Mxyzptlk, Aquaman, and Shazam. Each of these issues is in VF/NM condition with only slight wear on the edges - spines are nice and tight with very slight or no creasing at all. Each sports a 75 cent cover price and is valued at $2.50 each by the 2000 Overstreet price guide.
Next we have issue #351 (Sept. 1980 - 50 cent cover price) from the Superman comic. This volume was later re-titled to that of the above-mentioned series. This issue not only featured a full story titled "The Fiend with Nine Faces!" written by Gerry Conway, but also featured an eight page bonus story pitted Superman against that fiend of foes - Mr. Mxyzptlk, written by Denny O'Neil. This issue is in GD condition with wear and creasing throughout both covers and spine. All pages and bindings are intact.
Finally, we have five issues (#18-#22, June-Oct. 1988) from the second series titled Superman. Each issue has a 75 cent cover price and is in VF/NM condition showing little or no wear at all. Issues #18 and #19 continue the cross-stories with the Adventures comics above, and the other issues feature guest appearances by Supergirl, and the Doom Patrol. All stories were written by John Byrne. The 2000 Overstreet price guide values each issue at $2.50, except for #21 which was valued at $4.00. This issue featured Supergirl on the cover (well, her legs at any rate), and had the first appearance of Matrix, who becomes the new Supergirl.
