Description

In the nearly 70 years of comic book superherodom, many characters have graced the pages of their very own magazine. There have been an even greater number of supporting characters and villains that have made appearances to help or hinder our favorite heros. Every so often, though, one character stands out and gathers a fan base of their own. In the 60's and 70's one of these breakthrough characters was known only by the name of Silver Surfer. Created as a semi-villain who made his first appearance in Fantastic Four issue #48 (March 1966), the Surfer was the "henchman" of the planet eating Galactus, who had plans to make Earth his next feast. As it turns out, it was later discovered that the Sky-Rider of the Spaceways had sacrificed his own Humanity to save his own planet from similar destruction. Throughout number appearances and his own special books, the Silver Surfer's popularity has since grown to rival that of the more well know superheros.
This auction offers you the chance to get four unique comics starring the Surfer. The first is a two issue limited series published in 1988 by Marvel comics under the Epic name. Each issue has a cover price of $1.00 and features a story titled "Parable" written by Stan Lee with Moebius doing the covers and interior artwork. Each issue is in VF/NM condition, showing little wear or creasing; covers still retain their gloss; interior pages have aged in color slightly - issue #2 still retains more whiteness than issue #1; bindings are nice and tight. These comics are now valued at triple their original worth, the 2000 Overstreet price guide indicating $3.00 each.
Next, we dip a little farther back in time to 1980, and Marvel's Fantasy Masterpieces. This is issue #13 of volume 2 with a 75 cent cover price. This volume of the series offered up reprints of the original Silver Surfer stories and cover art, and this particular issue also includes an unrelated reprint story of Warlock, and even has a guest appearance by Captain Marvel. The Silver Surfer story is titled "The Dawn of the Doomsday Man!" which originally appeared in Silver Surfer #13 (volume 1 - Feb. 1970) and was produced by Stan Lee and John Buscema with inking and lettering by Dan Adkins and Sam Rosen. The Warlock story is titled "How Strange My Destiny!" which originally appeared in Warlock #10 (Dec. 1975). The comic remains in VF/NM condition with only a few slight creases on cover and spine; pages show some aging - beige in color; cover remains with a slight gloss; bindings are nice and tight. The 2000 Overstreet price guide values this issue at $2.00.
Finally we have an issue from the third and final Silver Surfer series - #20 (Feb. 1989) with a story titled "Aftermatch!" written by Steve Englehart with artwork by Ron Lim, Joe Rubinsten, Ken Bruzenak, Tom Vincent, and Tom Christopher. The issue is in FN condition with a crease/dent that appears from front cover through to back, and some creasing on the spine. It also has a one inch tear on the back cover which goes through all pages to front cover, reducing in length to about an 1/8 of an inch on front. Pages maintain a slightly off-white color and bindings are nice and tight. This issue has a cover price of $1.00 and is valued at $3.00 by the 2000 Overstreet price guide. Each issue will come in a protective mylar bag.
