Description

In the nearly 70 years of comic book superherodom, many characters have graced the pages of their very own magazine. There have been an even greater number of supporting characters and villains that have made appearances to help or hinder our favorite heros. Every so often, though, one character stands out and gathers a fan base of their own. In the 60's and 70's one of these breakthrough characters was known only by the name of Silver Surfer. Created as a semi-villain who made his first appearance in Fantastic Four issue #48 (March 1966), the Surfer was the “henchman” of the planet eating Galactus, who had plans to make Earth his next feast. As it turns out, it was later discovered that the Sky-Rider of the Spaceways had sacrificed his own Humanity to save his own planet from similar destruction. Throughout number appearances and his own special books, the Silver Surfer’s popularity has since grown to rival that of the more well know superheros.
This is a very special auction offering a hard to find original issue #12 from the first Silver Surfer volume dating back to 1969 (cover date is Jan. 1970, but comic books usually are released a couple of months prior to their date). The issue features a story titled “Gather, Ye Witches!” written by “the man” himself, Stan Lee. John Buscema, Dan Adkins, and Sam Rosen added the artwork. This book is in VF condition, showing very little wear aside from some slight and minor creasing throughout the covers and spine. There is one small half inch impression at the very bottom of the front cover (by the “bom” in The Abomination!) which filters through the first few pages or so, but shows very light on the interior. The cover still retains some shine to it, and the bindings are nice and tight - no rust or stain on the staples. The interior pages naturally show their age, having tinted a bit, but overall, this book is in awesome condition and has been taken care of through the years. It will ship in a protective mylar bag with cardstock backer. The 2000 Overstreet price guide values this comic at $50, so don’t pass this opportunity by to pick up a rare and special book for your collection!
