. Summoned by Books
Essays and Speeches
by Frances Clarke Sayers

. Summoned by Books is a book of essays and speeches by Frances Clarke Sayers and was compiled by Marjeanne Jensen Blinn with a foreword by Lawrence Clark Powell.

. It was published by the Viking Press out of New York. While first published in 1965 from the Viking Press, earlier copyrights from various of the included works begin from 1937.

. Hard cover book with dust jacket in mylar sleeve. Price not clipped. Former library book with stamps, pocket and tags. Light shelf wear and use. Non smoking storage.

. Frances Clarke Sayers (1897-1989).

. Convinced that good books could profoundly influence children, U.S. librarian, educator, and author Frances Clarke Sayers devoted her life to juvenile literature. Her efforts earned her several honors, including the 1965 Joseph W. Lippincott Award for distinguished service in the profession of librarianship

. Back in 1965, a book was published that celebrated the joys of reading. It was entitled Summoned by Books and consisted of a collection of essays by a professor of children's literature at ucla, Frances Clarke Sayers.

. In one of the essays, written nine years before, she is writing "Of Memory and Muchness". Her word muchness is cleverly taken from the mad tea party in Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, where the Dormouse asks "did you ever see such a thing as a drawing of a muchness?" Briefly, Sayers's answer is that she has had too much of "muchness" in the field of writing and publishing for the young: the exploitation of children through series books and their spinoffs and what she describes as "gigantic, stifling promotion". But it is rather obvious that in 1956 she thinks that there are too many children's books.

. I wonder what she would think of the 1990s when the publishing of children's books is considered big business.

. Measures approximately 6 x 8-1/2 x 1. 173 numbered pages.

. Wonderful, vintage find from a local Bergen County, New Jersey estate. One of many books that were willed to a local library for resale.

. S&H within the USA at Media Rate = $2.95 plus insurance, if desired.

. Shipments outside the USA to be priced separately - contact me for the S&H rates prior to submitting payment.

. Glad to combine wins for savings on S&H.

I'd like all my buyers to be comfortable with me as a seller here.

So, if you have a moment, please view my about me page and learn a little about me and how I conduct my business.

Should you have any problems with your item(s) or with receiving them, please contact me so that we may work out any problems together.

It is always our goal to ship promptly upon receiving payment. We will notify you when your payment is received and then ship as quickly as possible there after. Currently, we are going to the Post Office 4 days a week.

Where possible, we will quote the fixed S&H rates in each auction. This is easy for small objects and for items mailed at Media Rate. For larger items where the S&H will vary according to distance and weight, we will provide the S&H once the auction closes. The final S&H cost usually includes a small amount above the actual postage.

Insurance if desired is additional - I cannot be responsible for items lost or damaged in the mail although I will gladly assist you with your dealings with the U.S. Post Office. The amount varies according to the insured value of the package.

Shipping and handling for buyers outside the U.S. is obviously more and will be quoted on an auction by auction basis, so please e-mail me with your country and I'll get back to you with a quote for S&H.
