He fought in Selesia with the Freikorps Oberland before joining the National Socialist German Workers Party. In 1928, he became a member of the Schutzstaffell (SS) and his merits caught the eye of Adolph Hitler who chose him to lead his personal bodyguard unit. In 1934, Sepp led an execution squad during the Night of the Long Knives. He went on to be appointed commander of the 1st SS Panzer Division and participated in the invasion of France and Operation Barbarossa. He fought in Italy where he was accused of mistreating Allied prisoners of war. In June 1944 when the Allied forces landed in Normandy, Sepp, who was commanding three divisions of the 1st SS Panzer Corps, earned acclaim for his leadership abilities and Hitler rewarded him by giving him command of the new 6th SS Panzer Army. After fighting the Red Army, Sepp was heavily criticized for ordering the execution of Russian prisoners and in 1945, he surrendered himself to the US Army. He was tried and convicted of killing prisoners of war and sentenced to 25 years imprisonment. He was released after serving only 10; however, he was then arrested and charged for the murders committed during the Night of the Long Knives. Those offenses brought a sentence of 18 months. He died of a heart attack in 1966.
