Buddha is described as the ninth incarnation of Vishnu. Some scholars are of opinion that the inclusion of Buddha as incarnation of Vishnu was probably due to the rising popularity of Buddhism and for the purpose of subordinating it to hindusm. So some substitute in his place Balarama, the elder brother of Krishna. In the Krishna temple both Balaram and Buddha are included in the depiction of incarnations. Buddha is deoicted in various forms in various places. Generally he is shown with short kinky hair. He bears a calm and graceful apperence. The lobes of his ears are long. He wears a yellow robe. His hands are in boon-giving attitudes. Buddha is shown either in a standing or in a sitting pose. In the Krishna temple of Patan, Buddha is depicted in a sanding pose in a boon-giving and protecting attitude.
The image of Buddha in some places is that of Dhyani Buddha. In this pose also the calm and contemplative facial expression is most enchanting. However, Buddhists do not accept that Buddha was an incarnation of any god.
