HOW TO BUILD THE BOAT “8-FOOT SAILING PRAM”

This little 8-ft. sailboat is designed to be built of easy to obtain materials with just a minimum amount of woodworking skills. It is a great “First Time” project, or a teaching tool for a “Beginner Boat-Building Class.” It would make a great project for a “Sea-Scout” group.
The gaff-rig was used to make the sail easy to cut and sew on a home sewing machine. (You can use a cheaply obtainable small tarp and cut it to size!)
Total materials for the boat - including sails, hardware, fiberglass, resin and paint is probably less than $200. Construction time for two men is approximately 24 hours, but this does not include time spent looking for lost tools, coffee breaks, standing back and just looking at what you have accomplished - and getting your wife to clean-up after you while she listens to your brag about what you have accomplished so far and that your next project is probably going to be that splendid ocean-going yacht.
(TIP: Name the boat after your wife and she’ll be much more supportive.)
You can use very inexpensive Exterior A. C. grade plywood for all parts including dagger board and rudder. Clear white pine can be used for everything else. Of course, other materials can be used if you wish - such as: marine plywood, spruce, white oak for chines and clamps, redwood, spruce or 2-inch-diameter aluminum tubing for the mast, mahogany for rudder and dagger board, but, although they will make your project look much nicer, they will also bring your cost up!
And the best part is “The plans don’t cost you fifty bucks or more to obtain!” (There are 4 pages to these plans printed on 8 ½” x 11” sheets.)
ABOUT POSTAGE & HANDLING:
There are many people who believe that Postage & Handling is just the cost of the postage. This is far from true. There is also the cost of packaging (have you bought any packaging material from the Post Office or other sources lately?) There is the cost of the labor evolved, the cost of any CD’s, CD mailers, gas to the post office, etc. Try mailing something through those new packaging stores and see if they only charge you for postage. My son-in-law, who also has an eBay business, uses packaging stores exclusively. Even though they are very expensive, it is still cheaper than hiring employees and having to pay health insurance, etc.
Have you ever purchased anything through the mail and not had to pay Shipping & Handling? Try Whitneys, Sears, or any other big business! Oh, you say there are businesses on eBay that don’t charge shipping? Really? Do they sell their item for 99 cents? Of course not! They inflate their prices to absorb these costs.
