Description

William Monk and his wife Hester become involved in a murder investigation when their friend Lady Callandra Daviot asks them to help prove the innocence of her distinguished colleague, whose wife was one of the victims. The action moves from London to Vienna and deals with such issues as anti-Semitism and religious and intellectual freedom. The details of Victorian London are essential to the atmosphere of the book and help advance the story as the two search for the killer. Perry is so masterful at setting the scene that readers can picture the fog rolling in along the river, smell the stench that rises from the gutters, and hear the hooves of the horses as they plod along the cobblestone streets.

A secondary plot concerns the inner turmoil that Monk experiences as he joins forces with Runcorn, commander of the Totem Court Road police station and an old adversary. When Monk travels to Vienna to interview people who knew Kristian Beck and his wife, he finds treachery, deceit, and long-buried family secrets.

Will the devastating information that Monk uncovers be enough to save Beck's life? This is the issue that heightens the suspense throughout his murder trial..

Hard cover with dust jacket.

I'd like all my buyers to be comfortable with me as a seller here.

So, if you have a moment, please view my about me page and learn a little about me and how I conduct my business.

Should you have any problems with your item(s) or with receiving them, please contact me so that we may work out any problems together.

It is always our goal to ship promptly upon receiving payment. We will notify you when your payment is received and then ship as quickly as possible there after. Currently, we are going to the Post Office 4 days a week.

Where possible, we will quote the fixed S&H rates in each auction. This is easy for small objects and for items mailed at Media Rate. For larger items where the S&H will vary according to distance and weight, we will provide the S&H once the auction closes. The final S&H cost usually includes a small amount above the actual postage.

Insurance if desired is additional - I cannot be responsible for items lost or damaged in the mail although I will gladly assist you with your dealings with the U.S. Post Office. The amount varies according to the insured value of the package.

Shipping and handling for buyers outside the U.S. is obviously more and will be quoted on an auction by auction basis, so please e-mail me with your country and I'll get back to you with a quote for S&H.
