"CLOSE UP INTIMATE PORTRAIT" Intense street portrait of one of the two Democratic Contenders for the nomination of their party to run for the U.S. Presidency, both taken during the Oregon Primary, May 1968. See "Eugene McCarty Portrait" Catalog No. 427 for matching portrait and/or "Two Portraits" Catalog No. 426 to see both candidates paired together.
PHOTOGRAPHER'S STATEMENT: This intimate portrayal came out of from the volatile May 1968 Oregon Presidential Primary Campaign as McCarthy ran against Bobby Kennedy. The pose is revealing of Bobby's personality with up-close, intimate camerawork. McCarthy won the Oregon Primary and this portrait was made shortly before that election on the sidewalk outside of Portland's Benson Hotel. The camera I used for all of the Kennedy photographs was an original Motorized Nikon F with Nikkor Lenses. The portrait was taken with a 55mm "Micro" Nikkor lens, a personal favorite for available light razor sharp portrait photography. Exposures were made on Kodak TRI-X film. The original transparencies and negatives have been kept in dark storage and are in pristine condition!
