Willie and his sister Bobbie (his piano player) were raised by his grandparents and aunts. Willie""s first public performance was at the age of five when he recited a poem at a church picnic. He received his first guitar at the age of six. Willie and Bobbie learned music via mail-order courses and was taught to them by their grandparents. His first big break came when he played dances and honky-tonks with Bud Fletcher who gave him his first stage experience opening for Bob Wills. Willie earned money by selling encyclopedias door-to-door, worked at a local radio station, and had his own own regular local radio show by the time he graduated from high school. By 1959, he had been married and divorced and the father of two children. He served in the Air Force but was discharged due to back problems. At the age of twenty-three, Willie worked as a full-time disk jockey and wrote songs. He moved to Nashville in 1960 and lived there for ten years. He moved back to Texas after his Tennessee home was lost to fire in December 1970. In Texas, Willie began performing his own material and became a smash success. His first Independence Day Picnic was held in 1973 and is still celebrated today - a real Texas extravaganza. Willie""s spotlight grew brighter with each monumental hit and his superlative songwriting talent. Some of his most famous songs were performed by Patsy Cline (Crazy) and Faron Young (Hello Walls), just to mention a couple - the list is simply too long to recite them all. He has performed with some of the musical greats, and even enjoyed television and movie screen notoriety. Willie Nelson and his friends stage the Farm Aid performances which are legendary and has become an annual event. Not even the IRS could stop him, having sent him a $16+million debt for back taxes in 1990. By 1993, his IRS debt was paid off.
