1892 "Pictorial History of the Man and the Nation" entitled "COLUMBUS and COLUMBIA with 830 pages and over 500 illustrations. This large book measures about 10-1/2" by 7-5/8". Published by Historical Publishing Co., St. Louis, Mo. Copyright 1892 by H. S. Smith. Quoting from the title page "Embellished with over Five Hundred Engravings, Maps, Charts, Diagrams and Illustrations in Oil Colors by the Great Masters." The book begins with Columbus discovering America. See photos of the colored frontispiece of Columbus with "The First View of the New World". The book is divided into several parts: "Progress and Development of the Western World", "Columbus and the New World", Epoch of Discovery and Planting", "Epoch of Independence", "Epoch of Nationality", "Epoch of War and Greatness" and "Scope and Purpose of the World"s Fair". This book is just filled with wonderful full-page colored and full-page black and white illustrations of Columbus, The Revolutionary War, and the Civil War. The book ends with the "Columbian Exposition" World"s Fair to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the discovery of America by Columbus held April 1890. There is even a street map of Chicago. As the photos show the cloth cover with its leather trim has completely separated from the inside pages. The back cover is in poor condition as the cloth portion has lost its finish. It is soft and the center is a lighter purple color. The top and bottom page edges are colored with a watered design in burgundy. Because of the cover separation the first pages in the front of the book are loose, but they appear to be intact. The last pages of the book are loose, also, and one page is missing. The fold out color panaromic picture of the World"s Fair is torn in two and I found a colored picture of Columbus that is partially stuck to a facing page. A Wonderful Book because of the pictures and illustrations!. For more information, please email me Directly at msdoll99@msn.com.
