2000-P 1c GEM BU Thick Rim/Planchet 3-Coin Set; NICE! No Reserve
(3-Coin Set) This is an Original
NICE RED BU "FAT" Lincoln
Very THICK RIM/PLANCHET 2000-P Memorial Cent that appears as though it was struck on a Type II copper-plated zinc planchet prepared to Type I size specifications. Take a good look at our closeup pictures. The rim is much thicker than a normal cent and may have skipped the process that removes the sharp outer edge. This coin has more of a blunted appearance with the lettering somewhat distorted -- more so on obverse than reverse. I assume this is a copper-plated zinc planchet, although the coating seems different, but that may be due to the odd strike. This coin weighs more than a normal cent, but less than a Type I straight-copper cent. The last microphoto shows the comparison between this item and a normal copper-plated zinc cent, as well as an older straight-copper cent. Please also note that this thickness of the rim generally follows all the way around.
It is very likely that this coin was struck through some sort of liquid such as hydraulic fluid, though due to the uniformity of both the obverse and reverse surface as well as the rim, it seems to have to have been completely immersed during striking. This is probably not a major error, but more likely a major struck-through, and therefore is priced accordingly, yet it is a highly collectible BU coin that will fit into any collection. For comparison, this lot will include a second BU 2000-P cent which is a moderately Semi-Thick Planchet that has some of the same characteristics but generally does not follow all the way around the coin and lacks most of the odd strike, as well as a third BU 2000-P cent which is a normal Thin Planchet cent for this year.
In response to requests about weight, two pair were taken to a local jeweler: THICK planchet
coin in 2X2 paper/mylar holder weighed 5.035 grams; the raw thick coin weighed 2.524 grams; NORMAL coin weighed 5.019 grams in 2X2 and the raw normal one was 2.5008. The weight specification from the Red Book for this coin is 2.5 grams versus 3.1 grams for the straight copper planchet of pre-1982. This confirms my suspicion that the THICK planchet is a THICK Copper-Plated zinc planchet coin, but does not explain why it is so thick. As compared to a 2000-P Sacajawea dollar coin the rim on this cent is nearly that thick, however, I do not believe weight is a significant factor with regards to this interesting error/variety, anymore than with a DDO, DDR, RPM, etc.
Upon assembling a full roll of these, the roll was slightly longer than the old pre-"82 larger copper rolls. Many people do not realize this, but the post-"82 zinc cents are smaller/thinner and a standard roll of fifty coins would normally be about a half inch shorter than the older copper cent rolls. Machinists often use a self-lubricating metal for various applications, which also resembles this coin, especially on the surface, which would correlate with an oily residue, such as hydraulic fluid. Our conclusion therefore is that this coin would fall within the description of a "Struck-Through" error/variety, even though most of the coins in that group are normally struck through grease as opposed to a liquid lubricant, such as the coin you are bidding on. Starting bid is low on this fine NO RESERVE 3-coin set -- definitely a sleeper-keeper for anyone collecting error/variety coins.
